IL Barbiglione

A wine created to satisfy the senses, produced from pressing our finest Syrah grapes grown in the sandy soil so that it expresses its best potential. The best book we have to narrate Usiglian del Vescovo’s story and terroir.

Grape variety: Syrah with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
Soil: sandy (80-90%) with clay (5-15%), silt (0-5%) and fossils, light colour, shallow on average and dry.
Vine density: 5,000 plants per hectare
Training system: spurred cordon trained 80 cm from ground. Yield per
Yield per hectare: 50 quintals.

Wine making method

The grapes are hand-picked, placed in 200 Kg bins and transported to the cellar where they are de-stemmed and selected on a vibrating belt and then pressed. 15-20 days maceration at about 29°C follows, depending on the vintage, with frequent pumping. Malolactic fermentation takes place in cement tanks. The wine is left to age in barriques and tonneaux for a first pass of 12 months. This is followed by a final ageing of at least 12 months in the bottle.
Bottles produced: 30,000 per year

Tasting notes

Intense ruby colour with purple highlights. Rich and elaborate on the nose with well-defined hints of red berries such as blackberry, redcurrant and bilberry. Round and deep on the palate with an intriguing tannin development. Long finish with a surprising and vibrant freshness.

It pairs perfectly with red meat, game and mature cheese. Its scented, floral and fruity bouquet, combined with its freshness, make it suitable for spicy dishes (curry, curcuma, chilli) and Thai, Cantonese, Tex-Mex or Indian cuisine.
